A Look at the Evolution of Quality in Mexico and Its Contribution to the Development of the Industrial Sector: A Systematic Review
Main Article Content
Abstract
Quality management is a strategic factor for the economic development and competitiveness of any nation. In Mexico, despite regulatory advances and the adoption of international standards, significant challenges persist, especially in small and medium-sized enterprises. This article presents a systematic review of the literature following the PRISMA 2020 methodology. A structured search was conducted across Scopus, Web of Science, SciELO, and Google Scholar (2000-2025), yielding 45 studies for qualitative synthesis. The evolution of quality in Mexico shows a 47.6% increase in ISO 9001 certifications between 2000 and 2012. Organizations account for 60% of certified companies but only 1.2% of the total economic units in the country. The main enabling factors are senior management commitment and training; Barriers include financial constraints and resistance to change. In this sense, Mexico has improved its competitiveness in manufacturing, but still faces challenges in the mass adoption of quality in smaller companies. Digital transformation and Industry 4.0 emerge as opportunities to strengthen quality management systems. Finally, the evolution of quality has been decisive in positioning Mexico as a reliable supplier in global value chains. It is necessary to strengthen public policies, economic incentives, and training programs to overcome barriers in organizations and consolidate a culture of sustainable quality.
